Remdesivir is a type of antiviral drug used to treat patients with RNA viruses: Ebola, hepatitis, West Nile virus and coronaviruses, including MERS and SARS. In order for such viruses to reproduce effectively inside a cell, they need to obtain copies of their viral RNA. COVID-19 does this with the help of an enzyme called RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. But the virus can be deceived - so that it absorbs not this particular enzyme, but its modified counterpart, the medicine. This analogue can disrupt the chemistry of the virus, and it will lose the ability to replicate, self-reproduce. This means it can't spread further.
